Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing criticism after delivering a fiery pre-primary speech in which he promoted a series of far-left policy proposals, including universal health care, wealth taxes, and a Green New Deal, while also making a controversial remark about jailing billionaires in the context of campaign finance reform.
Speaking to supporters on Sunday night, Platner argued that money should be removed from politics and called for the repeal of Citizens United. He then drew attention when he suggested that elections should be publicly funded and jokingly floated the idea of imprisoning wealthy individuals over political advertising.
“We need to get money out of politics. We need to get rid of Citizens United. And, if I had my way, elections would last two months, they will be publicly funded and if a billionaire looked at a TV ad the wrong way, we'd put 'em in jail,” Platner told the crowd, drawing applause from attendees.
The remarks quickly generated backlash from Republican critics, who described the comments as extreme and pointed to what they called the “Marxist dystopian” nature of the proposal. Critics also noted that some organizations supporting Platner have received backing from billionaire-funded networks, raising questions about the consistency of his message.
Others used the controversy to highlight recent allegations made by an ex-girlfriend, joking that the candidate appeared to have an unusual interest in locking people up against their will.
During the speech, Platner also took aim at conservatives and President Donald Trump, whom he referred to as “dumb” while outlining his vision for the future.
The comments have added to the growing scrutiny surrounding Platner’s campaign as voters prepare to head into the primary election. Supporters view him as a progressive candidate willing to challenge the political establishment, while opponents argue that his latest remarks reveal an agenda that is increasingly out of touch with mainstream voters.
As the race moves forward, the controversy is likely to keep attention focused on Platner’s policy proposals and his rhetoric on the campaign trail. For now, one thing is clear: the speech succeeded in generating headlines, even if not everyone is applauding.
