The New York Times has officially jumped the shark. In a recent “analysis,” columnist Charlie Savage dismissed President Trump’s military strikes against Venezuelan drug smugglers by calling narcotics trafficking nothing more than the sale of an “illegal consumer product.” Yes, you read that right—fentanyl, heroin, meth—just casual “consumer products.” Maybe they’ll start reviewing them on the Lifestyle page next to perfume ads.
This is exactly why the American people don’t trust the media anymore. Tens of thousands of Americans are dying every single year from overdoses, most of them from fentanyl pouring across our southern border or shipped from China. These aren’t loose cigarettes or Cuban cigars. These are substances that can addict you in one hit—or kill you outright. Yet Savage, like much of the left-wing press, prefers to nitpick Trump’s constitutional authority instead of confronting the deadly reality.
President Trump has redefined the fight against cartels for what it really is: war. These aren’t small-time street dealers—they’re state-enabled organizations with governments looking the other way, or worse, encouraging the flood of poison to weaken America. But the Times would rather wring its hands about “armed conflict” while Americans bury their children.
And let’s not forget: George Floyd had lethal levels of fentanyl in his system when he overdosed in 2020. That single fact alone should’ve been a wake-up call to the nation’s so-called “prestigious” press to start treating fentanyl as the weapon it is. Instead, they’re still busy pretending it’s just another “consumer product.”
If the media were serious, they’d ask the real questions: How did drug cartels get so powerful? Why has Washington ignored this problem for so long? What stronger actions can be taken to stop the scourge? But that would require curiosity, honesty, and courage—three things that The New York Times abandoned a long time ago.
Trump isn’t afraid to call the problem what it is: a war being waged against the United States. The Times isn’t just blind to that fact—it’s actively mocking anyone who dares to take action. And that’s why Americans will continue turning to Trump’s leadership instead of the media’s excuses.
