Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, are receiving praise online after they were spotted flying economy class on a commercial flight. The couple was filmed in a TikTok video as they boarded the flight separately before sitting together in the economy section next to other passengers.
The sighting has sparked positive reactions, especially when compared to high-profile politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who have faced criticism for their use of private jets. One social media user pointed out the contrast, writing, “Meanwhile, Bernie and AOC flying on private jets because ‘we must fight the billionaires.’”

Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders have been traveling on a Bombardier Challenger 604—a luxury aircraft valued at $5 million to $7 million and costing around $15,000 per hour to charter. The pair was seen exiting the jet while heading to rallies as part of Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which aims to challenge the power of corporate elites and billionaires.
However, their private jet use has been criticized, particularly due to its environmental impact. The Bombardier Challenger burns 365 gallons of fuel every 1.32 hours, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. According to research, frequent private jet travelers emit nearly 500 times more carbon annually than the average person worldwide.

In contrast, Kennedy and Hines’ decision to fly commercially is being hailed by some as a more down-to-earth and environmentally conscious choice. This public approval contrasts with the backlash faced by former HHS Secretary Tom Price, who resigned in 2017 after using more than $1 million in taxpayer funds for chartered flights during his time in the Trump administration.
While the HHS did not respond to a request for comment on Kennedy’s travel, the couple’s economy class flight has become a notable example of public figures making an effort to align their actions with their political values.
