Tension erupted near the White House after reports of gunfire triggered a temporary lockdown Saturday, proving once again that the Secret Service doesn’t exactly play around when it comes to protecting President Donald Trump. Shocking, right?
According to law enforcement officials, a suspect approached a checkpoint near the White House and opened fire at officers near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Secret Service agents immediately returned fire, containing the situation within moments. Initially no agents were reported to be injured during the confrontation, but it was later known that three individuals were struck by gunfire during the incident: the suspect, identified as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland, who died on the way to GW Medical Center, and a bystander and one Secret Service agent, who were hospitalized. Authorities confirmed the scene was quickly secured and the threat contained.
Inside the White House, journalists and staff members were briefly placed on lockdown while President Trump remained safely inside the executive mansion. Members of the press nearby reported hearing several gunshots before being instructed to shelter in place as Secret Service restricted movement around the area.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated authorities were actively responding to reports of shots fired and updated the nation as more information became available.
Reporter Chris Flanagan later posted on social media that those inside the lockdown had been released as normal operations slowly resumed around the White House grounds.
Despite the chaos, the swift response from federal agents ensured the situation was brought under control quickly and effectively. Another reminder that when it comes to protecting President Trump and the White House, law enforcement stands ready — and thankfully, competence still exists in at least a few corners of Washington.
