Truly heartening news emerged late Friday about West Virginia National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, one of two guardsmen shot in a terrorist ambush in Washington, D.C., ahead of Thanksgiving.
In a statement released by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Wolfe’s medical team and family shared what can only be described as a miraculous update. Wolfe, who suffered a critical gunshot wound to the head in the attack carried out by an Afghan national, has made extraordinary progress after initially fighting for his life. The attack claimed the life of fellow Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom.
According to neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Mai, Wolfe was airlifted to MedStar 16 days ago in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery to stop bleeding and relieve pressure on his brain.
“Today, we are proud to share that Staff Sgt. Wolfe has made extraordinary progress,” Mai said. “He is now breathing on his own and can stand with assistance—important milestones that reflect his strength and determination.”
Because of these improvements, Wolfe is now transitioning from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation, the next step in what doctors emphasize is still a long recovery process.
Wolfe’s parents, Melody and Jason Wolfe, expressed deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, calling their son’s recovery “miraculous.” They also credited the power of prayer for his progress.
“We know and appreciate the power of prayer, and we see the result of God working with and through these amazing medical professionals,” the family said. “People around the world are praying for Andy, and the presence of God was evident in his room on many occasions.”
The family asked for continued prayers as Wolfe begins intensive rehabilitation, expressing confidence that he will continue to improve and eventually return to service with the West Virginia National Guard.
They also thanked the overwhelming support shown by the military community and public officials, including President Donald Trump, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice, and members of the state’s congressional delegation.
The family has chosen not to disclose the location of Wolfe’s rehabilitation facility.
Just days ago, officials reported that Wolfe had only begun responding to questions, underscoring how dramatic his improvement has been in a short time. As his family noted, during this season especially, his recovery stands as a powerful reminder that miracles still happen.
Prayers continue for Andrew Wolfe, as well as for the family of Sarah Beckstrom, whose life was tragically lost in the attack.
