California's Reckless Release: 24,000 Criminal Illegal Immigrants Set Free, Defying Federal Law and Endangering Americans

California's radical sanctuary policies have unleashed a catastrophic wave of crime, with nearly 24,000 illegal immigrants — many convicted of heinous offenses like murder and child cruelty — released back into communities since January 20, 2025. This shocking revelation comes directly from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), exposing the Golden State's dangerous refusal to honor lawful Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers.

The sheer scale of this betrayal of public trust is staggering. DHS reports more than 81,000 criminal charges or convictions are associated with these ignored detainers. The list reads like a roll call of societal breakdown: 3,295 burglaries, 1,097 assaults, 1,088 drug trafficking charges, 169 homicides, and 147 sexual assaults. These aren't minor infractions; these are serious, violent crimes committed by individuals who should have been deported, not set free.

An ICE detainer is a straightforward request for local law enforcement to simply notify federal authorities before releasing a removable illegal immigrant. It’s a common-sense tool designed to ensure public safety by giving DHS time to take custody of individuals who pose a threat or have committed crimes. ICE issues these detainers specifically when an illegal immigrant has been convicted or is a threat to national security. Yet, California actively undermines this vital safeguard.

The consequences are chillingly real. Among those released due to California's defiance are a Salvadoran national convicted of both child cruelty and murder, a Cuban convicted of second-degree murder, an Armenian convicted of voluntary manslaughter, and a Libyan convicted of assault with a firearm. These individuals, whom ICE had explicitly sought to detain in 2025 or 2026, were instead released from jail, free to potentially re-offend and terrorize innocent Americans. Because of course they did.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin minced no words in his condemnation, stating, "Sanctuary politicians have not only refused to cooperate with federal law enforcement to target and arrest the worst of the worst—but they’ve released nearly 24,000 criminal illegal aliens onto the streets of California to terrorize innocent Americans." This isn't just a policy disagreement; it's a direct assault on the safety and security of American families.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta's guidance bizarrely dictates that state and local resources must not assist immigration enforcement unless "lawfully required," actively discouraging cooperation and limiting information sharing with federal agencies. It demands "appropriate legal process—such as a judicial warrant, judicial subpoena, or court order—before complying," essentially erecting bureaucratic walls to protect criminals over citizens.

Governor Gavin Newsom, while attempting to defend his state's sanctuary policies, once claimed California "has cooperated with more ICE transfers probably than any other state in the country." He even stated he vetoed legislation that would further hinder cooperation. Yet, these claims ring hollow in the face of 24,000 ignored detainers and countless criminal illegal immigrants roaming free. Apparently, "cooperation" has a very different meaning in Sacramento.

The tragic reality of these policies hit home in June, when an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, for whom ICE had lodged detainers twice in California, was charged with murdering a veteran in Utah. Both times, California refused to honor the requests, releasing the individual to commit further atrocity. This was not an accident; it was a foreseeable consequence of willful negligence.

California is not alone in this dangerous game. New York state has also faced criticism for failing to comply with ICE detainers, with 14,916 ignored between January 2025 and September 2026, associated with 47,750 criminal charges and convictions. The pattern is clear: progressive policies prioritizing illegal status over public safety, leaving citizens vulnerable.

As Secretary Mullin rightly concluded, "Sanctuary politicians create an environment for criminal activity to thrive, not for American citizens to be safe. President Trump made it clear that he would restore law and order in our cities and in our states. When you have sanctuary cities and politicians, you endanger the safety of the public." The American people deserve leaders who prioritize their safety, uphold the rule of law, and honor the principles of accountability. The reckless endangerment of citizens by California's leadership is a stark reminder of what is at stake and why an America First approach to border security and law enforcement is not just policy, but a moral imperative.
