Six months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished under mysterious circumstances, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has released critical new details, including the full text of alarming ransom notes and further information regarding an unidentified man captured on a doorbell camera.
Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed on the six-month anniversary of Guthrie’s disappearance that investigators are diligently pursuing leads and implored the public to assist in identifying the individual believed to hold the key to the case.
Authorities are zeroing in on a mysterious man depicted in two videos recovered by the FBI from Guthrie’s doorbell camera. Sheriff Nanos stated plainly that this man “knows what happened to Nancy.”
The first note, unveiled on July 31, was a chilling ransom demand sent on February 2 via a local news station’s online tip form. It brazenly demanded "$4 million USD before 5PM on Thursday the 5th."
The message ominously continued: "If payment is not received, the ransom will be increased to 6 million USD which will need to be paid by 5PM on. Monday the 9th. Once payment is received to the bitcoin address below she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson. If payment is not received by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5PM, she will be killed." Such a stark threat underscores the cold calculation behind this heinous crime.
A second, equally disturbing note arrived on February 6, framed as an apology to the "Guthrie Family," also submitted through the same news site.
In this second communication, the writer claimed: "We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry."
Investigators are now pinning their hopes on these notes, believing the distinctive “patterns of word choice, syntax, and phraseology” could be recognized by someone familiar with the writer’s unique "linguistic style."
Despite the critical nature of these communications, a sheriff’s spokesman offered no explanation for why these vital pieces of evidence were withheld from the public for so many months.
The FBI had previously released videos on February 10, showing the unidentified man at Guthrie’s front door on the night she vanished.
"We have recovered videos from her residence showing an unidentified male who knows what happened to Nancy," the sheriff’s department reiterated, highlighting the central role this individual plays in the investigation.

On the night of January 31 to February 1, Guthrie’s doorbell camera detected movement before it was disconnected. This recovered video shows an armed man, disguised in a ski mask and gloves and carrying a backpack, tampering with the camera just before Ms. Guthrie disappeared.
The sheriff’s department confirmed that the videos "indicate he took steps to prepare for the event on the night of January 31 to February 1," painting a picture of a premeditated act.
The public is urged to look for any subtle changes in people’s behavior, physical appearance, or daily routines that might suggest involvement in this grave incident.
