China and U.S. Find Rare Common Ground Against Iran’s Hormuz Power Grab

The United States and China appear to have found rare common ground: stopping Iran from turning the Strait of Hormuz into a global toll booth.

According to the State Department, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed during an April phone call that no country should be allowed to charge shipping tolls through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.

The issue comes as President Donald Trump prepares for a major summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, where Iran’s blockade of the strait is expected to be a major topic.

Iran’s restrictions on the key trade route have rattled global energy markets since the February airstrikes carried out by Israel and the U.S. Tehran has demanded the right to collect fees from ships passing through the area, while the Trump administration has pushed for fully reopening the waterway.

China’s embassy also signaled support for restoring normal traffic, saying safe and open passage serves the interests of the international community.

For once, even Washington and Beijing seem to agree that letting Iran shake down the world’s shipping lanes is probably not the best idea. And with President Trump leading the negotiations, the pressure on Tehran is only growing.
