Authorities in Midland, Texas, are continuing their investigation after a shooting Friday left one person dead and 10 others wounded in an incident that unfolded across multiple locations and prompted a major law enforcement response.
Officials identified the deceased suspect as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45. According to authorities, Villarreal allegedly opened fire at both officers and bystanders before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic in downtown Midland.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said during a news conference that police used robot and drone footage to confirm the suspect was deceased inside the building. Officials have not yet determined or announced how he died.
Midland Memorial Hospital reported receiving nine victims connected to the shooting. Four were initially taken into surgery. By mid-afternoon local time, five victims had been discharged, three had exited surgery, and one remained in an operating room.
According to Midland Police Chief Greg Snow, the incident began in southeast Midland and moved across south Midland. Officers were first dispatched around 8:03 a.m. local time following reports of a disturbance involving weapons and gunfire.
The response expanded rapidly into a large multi-agency operation involving the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers, Odessa Police Department, and sheriff’s offices from Midland and Ector counties.
Authorities also deployed armored vehicles to safely remove officers who had become pinned behind patrol units during the confrontation.
