A senior official in President Donald Trump’s administration says the Republican strategy for the 2026 midterm elections will focus squarely on contrasting current economic and border policies with those under former President Joe Biden.

Speaking with the Daily Caller, Blair said Republicans plan to remind voters what conditions were like before Trump returned to office.

“Look, under Joe Biden and the Democrats’ reckless policies, we got four-decade-high inflation. To get a 30-year fixed mortgage was almost 8%,” Blair said. “Now that’s in the fives — it’s dropped below 6% — and that’s just a year into office.”

Blair also pointed to declining gas prices and other economic indicators as evidence of what he described as improved leadership under the current administration.

According to Blair, the GOP’s core argument to voters will be that continued Republican control is necessary to prevent a return to Democratic policies.

“I think reminding voters that there is another side of this coin, that things don’t just get better on their own,” Blair told the Caller.

He highlighted border security as a key example of that contrast.

“A great example of that is the border. Remember when the Democrats and Joe Biden were saying, ‘well, we’ve got to change the laws, and that will help us get the border under control.’ We didn’t change any laws,” Blair said. “We just got a new president and Republicans in Congress, and we started enforcing border security.”

Blair warned that if Democrats regain power in 2026, they could undo those changes.

“If Democrats are elected in 2026 and beyond, they can work to roll those policies back and revert the progress that has been made,” he said.

Republican strategists believe this message — focusing on inflation, mortgage rates, gas prices, and border enforcement — will resonate with voters who experienced both administrations and can directly compare the outcomes.
