The announcement came Friday from U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, President Donald Trump’s appointee as the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, prosecutors have launched several election-related investigations and assigned a federal prosecutor to observe operations at Los Angeles County’s ballot tabulation center.
The developments follow concerns raised by President Trump regarding California’s extended vote-counting process. As additional mail-in ballots continued to be counted in the days after the election, Democrat-leaning votes narrowed margins for several candidates supported by the president, including races for governor and mayor of Los Angeles.
Trump first raised concerns on Thursday and returned to the issue again Friday during a roundtable discussion in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The president alleged that Democrats were manipulating the election process and called for closer examination of the ongoing vote count.
