Israeli Strikes Kill Nine in Lebanon Days After New Ceasefire Agreement

Tensions in the Middle East escalated once again on Saturday after Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon reportedly killed nine people, including three members of the Lebanese military, just days after Israel and Lebanon reached a new ceasefire agreement following U.S.-brokered negotiations.

According to reports, one strike targeted a vehicle on a road connecting the city of Nabatiyeh and the town of Marjayoun. The Lebanese army said the attack killed a brigadier general, a captain, and another soldier.

A separate strike on the southern village of Saksakiyah reportedly killed six people and wounded four others.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack, calling it “a flagrant violation to Lebanese sovereignty and international law.” He argued that the strike came amid ongoing efforts by Lebanon to secure an end to hostilities through negotiations with Washington.

The Lebanese army also criticized the operation, stating that repeated Israeli attacks strengthen its determination while undermining efforts aimed at restoring stability and achieving a comprehensive ceasefire.

Israel, however, said the targeted vehicle had been moving suspiciously toward Israeli troops near the village of Kfar Tibnit. The Israeli military stated it had received “concrete indications” that Hezbollah was preparing to direct fire at Israeli soldiers from the area. Israeli officials emphasized that their operations are directed against Hezbollah, not the Lebanese army.

The latest violence comes as Lebanon’s government has increasingly expressed frustration with Hezbollah’s role in regional tensions. Both President Aoun and Lebanon’s prime minister recently criticized Iran for opposing the newest ceasefire arrangement, arguing that Lebanon should not serve as a “bargaining chip” in negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to reports, Israeli forces now control roughly one-fifth of Lebanon, representing their deepest advance into the country since Israel ended its occupation in 2000. The current conflict intensified after Hezbollah launched attacks following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran during Operation Epic Fury, opening another front in the broader regional confrontation.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the latest developments highlight the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the challenges facing leaders seeking to restore stability. With negotiations still underway and pressure mounting on all sides, many hope a lasting solution can prevent further escalation and bring greater security to the region.
