CNN’s Jake Tapper did something rare on Tuesday: he held a Democrat accountable using their own words. And let’s just say Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett didn’t exactly enjoy hearing her December 2024 Vanity Fair quote read back to her — you know, the one where she claimed Latinos who voted for President Donald Trump have a “slave mentality.” Real unifying stuff there.
In that profile, Crockett suggested that Latino Trump supporters must “hate themselves” since the former president wants to deport illegal immigrants. Because apparently, according to her, supporting border security is now some kind of psychological disorder. Democrats really do love redefining everything, don’t they?
Tapper read her words straight from the source:
“It’s almost like a slave mentality that they have.”
Then he reminded her that around a million Latino voters in Texas were voting for Trump at the time. A record high, by the way — but Crockett still insists she wasn’t calling them all slaves. Of course not. She was only referring to the ones smart enough to support secure borders, strong leadership, and a thriving economy. Big difference, right?
When Tapper asked if all those Latino Trump voters had a “slave mentality,” Crockett scrambled:
“No, and that’s not what that said at all,” she insisted — even though that’s exactly what she said. She tried spinning it into some abstract commentary about immigration policy, but once something is in print, it’s a little hard to wiggle out. Even CNN couldn’t rescue her this time.
Let’s talk facts: Trump earned the highest share of the Latino vote ever recorded for a Republican nominee, winning roughly 46% to 48%, including a strong majority of Latino men. Turns out the Latino community doesn’t appreciate being lectured by Democrats who think they know what’s best for them. Who could’ve guessed?
Now Crockett is launching a Senate campaign, claiming she can flip Texas blue — while boldly declaring she doesn’t need Trump voters at all. A fascinating strategy, considering those same voters are the reason Democrats keep losing ground in the state. But hey, if she wants to run a statewide campaign by insulting nearly half the Latino electorate, that’s her choice. Bless her heart.
At the end of the day, Tapper didn’t humiliate her — her own words did. And if this is how her Senate run is starting, Texans might want to grab some popcorn. One thing’s certain: Trump voters — including the millions of proud Latinos who support him — will keep proving the Democrats wrong. And that’s always something to celebrate.
