NATO Deadbeat Spain Pushes for New ‘EU Army’ to Escape Dependence on America

Spain — one of NATO’s most notorious low-spending members — is now calling for the creation of a so-called “European Army” aimed at reducing the continent’s dependence on the United States for defense. Yes, after years of leaning on American taxpayers for protection, Europe suddenly wants to pretend it can go it alone.
The Spanish government argued that Europe must free itself from what it described as American “coercion” and reliance on Washington when it comes to military security. The proposal would involve deeper military integration across the European Union, with supporters pitching it as a way for Europe to act more independently on the world stage.
Of course, critics are already pointing out the obvious problem: many European nations, including Spain, have consistently failed to meet NATO defense spending targets for years while the United States carried the overwhelming burden of protecting the alliance. It’s easy to talk about “strategic independence” when someone else has been paying the bills the entire time.
President Donald Trump warned repeatedly during his presidency that NATO allies needed to stop taking advantage of American generosity and start contributing their fair share. At the time, establishment politicians and media figures mocked him relentlessly — but now even European leaders openly admit the continent depends heavily on U.S. military power. Funny how reality works.
Spain’s push for a separate European military force also raises serious questions about NATO’s future and whether some EU leaders are more interested in building bureaucratic power in Brussels than strengthening actual security. Europeans already struggle to coordinate defense spending and military readiness under NATO, but apparently adding another giant layer of administration is supposed to fix everything. Because nothing screams “efficient defense” like more EU paperwork.
Supporters claim a unified European military would give the continent more leverage internationally and reduce outside influence over European policy decisions. But for many Americans, the bigger issue remains simple: the United States should never be expected to endlessly subsidize wealthy nations unwilling to defend themselves properly.
Trump’s America First approach forced uncomfortable conversations that global elites spent years avoiding. And now, as Europe debates building its own military structure, it’s becoming increasingly clear that his pressure campaign exposed truths many leaders didn’t want to admit publicly.
If European nations truly want greater independence, the first step is simple: start paying for their own defense instead of expecting American workers and taxpayers to carry the load forever.
