An executive order grandly calling for an "AI kill switch" – a move that sounds more like a sci-fi plot device than a serious policy solution from a state already spiraling.
While Democrats seem to embrace executive orders with fervent enthusiasm – unless, of course, President Trump dares to sign one – this pronouncement from the Newsom camp reaches new heights of nonsensical posturing. The governor's office proudly announced his order would assemble "a group of world-leading experts to provide, within two months, a guide for California to reinforce and strengthen its AI safety and security laws."
Among the "proposals under consideration" are demands for "independent third parties to write safety plans for frontier AI companies, as well as requiring companies to develop an emergency shutoff, or 'kill switch,' for frontier models." The audacity is remarkable: Newsom cannot simply mandate these sweeping measures on private companies, and the notion that a state-level executive order will truly control the global advancement of artificial intelligence is, frankly, absurd.
Yet, the theatrics continue. Newsom, eyeing a potential 2028 presidential bid, brazenly declared that the "Trump administration has abdicated 'its responsibility to protect Americans'" as AI technology rapidly advances. This thinly veiled attempt to politicize an emerging technology while simultaneously pushing ineffective state-level mandates is a classic move from the progressive playbook. He recommends more oversight, he "calls on the federal government," and then attempts to prod the Democrat-dominated California Assembly into passing predictably "progressive" legislation. It's all about movement, not results.
The order also claims to accelerate the implementation of existing California laws and an AI auditor registry, moving it from January 2029 to December 2027. Newsom himself admitted that the "kill switch" idea is in its "infancy" and requires a "panel of experts" to explore further. One might wonder if this is the same caliber of expert panel that brilliantly managed the state's famously dysfunctional high-speed rail project. Apparently, common sense needed a permission slip.
This isn't about genuine AI regulation; it's about Gavin Newsom buffing his progressive credentials and positioning himself for higher office. California, meanwhile, continues to pay the price for this brand of performative politics. One has to ask: if Newsom's goal was to drive every remaining tech company out of the Golden State, what precisely would he be doing differently? The truth is, he knows precious little about AI, and it’s a safe bet he cares even less about real solutions than he does about his own political trajectory.
This entire charade is a naked attempt at positioning for a 2028 presidential run – assuming, of course, that Kamala Harris doesn't throw her hat in the ring. The prospect of another Harris White House run is, quite simply, an eventuality that Republicans across the country are hitting their knees every morning and evening praying for.
Interestingly, some old footage seems to suggest Newsom honed his mastery of the empty gesture during his college days, learning from another master of the art.
What Californians and the nation truly need are leaders focused on tangible results, economic stability, and the security of American citizens, not politicians engaged in performative virtue signaling.
