A horrific school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left nine innocent people dead, with the suspect also deceased, according to the CBC.
The attack occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and prompted an immediate lockdown and “secure and hold” at both the secondary school and nearby Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, the Associated Press reported. Authorities initially confirmed “at least seven” fatalities before later reports raised the number to nine.
Peace River South School District acknowledged the emergency in a public statement, saying it was aware of the lockdown and security measures at both schools as the situation unfolded.
Peace River South legislative assembly member Larry Neufeld said he was in contact with provincial officials as the response continued. “I am aware of the active shooter situation currently unfolding in Tumbler Ridge, and my thoughts are with residents as this situation continues to develop,” Neufeld said. He added that he has been working with the Solicitor General to ensure all necessary provincial resources are available to support law enforcement and emergency responders.
Police said the suspect died from a “self-inflicted injury,” bringing the immediate threat to an end.
This tragedy is a stark reminder that violence in schools is not an American-only problem, despite what certain commentators love to claim. When evil strikes, it doesn’t respect borders, political systems, or gun laws — it targets the innocent.
For now, the focus remains on the victims, their families, and a shaken community trying to make sense of an unthinkable loss. Law enforcement and emergency crews acted swiftly to secure the area and protect students and staff.
In moments like this, what matters most is unity, compassion, and resolve. The people of Tumbler Ridge are facing an awful day, but they are not facing it alone — and with justice pursued and the community standing together, even the darkest moments can be met with strength and solidarity.
