The latest chapter in political double standards is unfolding in New York City, where Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani is championing a new initiative: city-run grocery stores. But before New Yorkers can access these government-subsidized provisions, Mamdani’s administration has a crucial requirement: identification.

This mandate, seemingly driven by a desire for control, aims to prevent abuse of the program. Mayor Mamdani explained, "So our RFP [Request for Proposal] makes it very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling." His administration plans to issue a special ID card, a "library card-esque thing," according to Jeanny Pak, interim president and CEO of the NYC Economic Development Corporation, to "make sure that we target New Yorkers." Without this card, shoppers will be barred from making purchases.

Yet, this demand for identification for a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk stands in stark, almost comedic, contrast to the progressive left's vehement opposition to voter ID laws. For years, Democrats, including the very circles Mamdani runs in, have decried voter identification as a tool of "voter suppression," claiming it would "reverse the gains of the Civil Rights Movement and marginalize working-class Americans." Apparently, a library card to buy groceries is a step forward, but showing an ID to protect the integrity of your vote is an attack on democracy itself. And somehow, they still expect Americans not to notice.

This isn't the first time Mamdani’s administration has found ID requirements perfectly acceptable for its own programs. Earlier this year, his emergency snow shoveler labor initiative required two forms of identification and other paperwork. When pressed on this discrepancy—two IDs to shovel snow, but none to cast a ballot—Mamdani offered a revealing answer. "Well, here in New York City, we follow the law, and it’s federal law to require certain forms of identification in order for someone to actually be paid for this kind of a job. And so that’s what we’re asking for — two forms of identification. It’s a longstanding city program. It’s a longstanding city policy."

But here's the kicker: there’s no "federal law" dictating that city-run grocery stores must demand an ID. This isn't a job with federal employment rules; it's a purchase of basic necessities. Private membership stores like Costco or Sam’s Club require cards for entry, but those are private enterprises, and Mamdani's "free access cards" for government stores are a new layer of bureaucratic gatekeeping. The mayor’s team seems to invent ID requirements at will when it serves their agenda of control, while simultaneously fighting against the fundamental common-sense measure of securing our elections.

The glaring hypocrisy on display by Mayor Mamdani and his allies isn't just an amusing anecdote; it's a stark reminder of the left's transactional view of citizenship. They demand identification when it allows them to control who benefits from government programs, yet rail against it when it ensures the bedrock principle of one legal vote per legal voter.

This selective outrage against voter ID undermines public trust in our electoral system and exposes a dangerous ideology that prioritizes government overreach and political expediency above the integrity of our elections and the common sense of the American people.
