Ohio Democrat Amy Acton is attempting to position herself as a moderate in the governor’s race, but past records are raising serious questions about just how “moderate” that image really is.
While serving as a grants manager at the Columbus Foundation, Acton oversaw funding connected to millions of dollars in grants distributed in 2017 and 2018 to a wide range of progressive organizations.
According to records, the grants went to groups involved in abortion services, immigration and refugee programs, climate activism, diversity initiatives, civil liberties litigation, and Muslim advocacy organizations.
Critics argue the funding history paints a very different picture from the centrist image Acton is now trying to project on the campaign trail. Conservatives say it’s another example of Democrats campaigning as moderates in swing states while quietly supporting policies and organizations aligned with the activist left.
The issue is already fueling backlash among Republican voters in Ohio, where many residents are increasingly skeptical of politicians who try to rebrand themselves during election season. Funny how the “moderate” label always seems to appear right when campaign ads start rolling out.
As the governor’s race heats up, Acton’s record at the Columbus Foundation is likely to remain a major point of debate — especially as voters look more closely at where candidates’ priorities and alliances truly stand.
