Pentagon and Lookheed Martin Ink Historic Deal to Mass-Produce AIM 260 Air-Dominance domines Missiles to Counter China

WASHINGTON — In a major victory for American defense readiness and technological superiority, the Department of Defense and defense giant Lockheed Martin announced a landmark framework agreement on Thursday, September 17, 2026, to rapidly ramp up production of the highly classified AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM).

The high-stakes agreement lays the groundwork for a multiyear procurement contract—pending congressional sign-off—designed to send long-term demand signals through the U.S. defense industrial supply chain. Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey emphasized that the partnership provides the stability and scale required to equip American fighter pilots with unmatched air-to-air lethality.

Designed to replace the aging AIM-120 AMRAAM, the next-generation AIM-260 missile offers extended range, superior seeker technology, and unmatched lethality tailored directly to outclass rival systems like Communist China’s PL-15. The new weapon system is slated for deployment across premier tactical platforms, including the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, and the joint-service F-35 Lightning II.

Key highlights of the strategic defense framework include:

 * Industrial Base Expansion: Provides long-term multiyear demand guarantees, enabling Lockheed Martin and key domestic subcontractors to invest aggressively in factory capacity, manufacturing technology, and high-skilled defense jobs.

 * Allied Deterrence Power: Paves the way for Foreign Military Sales (FMS), backed by major allied commitments—including Australia’s recent $736 million investment to integrate the AIM-260 into the Royal Australian Air Force.

 * AFA Acceleration: Air Force Test Center Commander Brig. Gen. Mark Massaro confirmed at the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2026 conference that live-fire testing at Edwards Air Force Base is being fast-tracked to accelerate operational deployment.

The decisive deal marks a critical triumph for President Donald Trump’s peace-through-strength defense doctrine. By cutting through bureaucratic acquisition red tape, bolstering domestic manufacturing capacity, and ensuring U.S. warfighters possess decisive air dominance, the administration is proving to foreign adversaries that American military supremacy remains absolute, sovereign, and unchallenged.
