A self-proclaimed progressive 'kingmaker' finds himself in hot water, as prominent Democrats and activists are now openly challenging far-left streamer Hasan Piker over a pattern of outrageous rhetoric and a transparent playbook designed to brush off his most controversial statements. The internal spat reveals a growing chasm within the Democratic Party, grappling with the toxicity of its own extreme voices.

The controversy ignited when Democratic political operative and gun control activist Shannon Watts torched Piker, accusing him of employing a predictable set of excuses to deflect from his past online comments. Piker, a far-left streamer and self-appointed voice of the progressive movement, has faced increasing scrutiny for his unhinged claims.

"Hasan Piker defense Bingo card: ‘It’s a joke, satire, hyperbole. It’s out of context. It was years ago,’" Watts posted, detailing Piker's evasive tactics. "‘English is my second language. I stream for hours. Bad faith clipping. Smear campaign. Critics are being paid for Israel.’"

Piker quickly fired back, acknowledging the pattern while resorting to familiar ad hominem attacks. "All of that is true and valid. You behave as a GOP operative. You’re a shameless grifter who doesn’t care about the Dem Senate majority or punishing Trump," Piker wrote.

But the progressive streamer's attempt to label Watts a "GOP operative" was immediately rebutted by Fred Guttenberg, a Democratic activist whose daughter was tragically murdered in the Parkland shooting. Guttenberg unleashed a scathing critique, stating, "And you are a copycat of MAGA tactics engaging in alternative facts. As a Jewish person whose daughter was murdered in the Parkland shooting and whose brother died because of 9/11, your attack on Shannon is batsh-- crazy and your comparison of the NRA and AIPAC only confirms your insanity." He continued, "Using your MAGA styled attacks against someone like Shannon or me won't work. Stop being a copycat."

This escalating online clash between Watts and Piker spotlights a growing concern among some Democrats regarding controversial comments and videos from their progressive figures. From former Senate candidate Graham Platner, whose eyebrow-raising Reddit posts escalated into sexual assault allegations, to Michigan's Senate Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who faced backlash for past calls to defund the police, the party is struggling to reconcile its embrace of radical voices with the need for electability and public trust.

While Piker himself isn't running for office, his role as a surrogate for figures like El-Sayed and other progressive candidates has drawn considerable scrutiny for a long list of inflammatory remarks. These include his infamous 2019 assertion that "America deserved 9/11," which he later "walked back" as "inappropriate" after a public outcry. On another occasion, when directly asked if he supported terrorism, Piker chillingly replied, "No, I don’t. I don’t support the state of Israel, and I don’t support the state of the United States of America."

Piker's past comments caught up to him recently when the University of Washington canceled an event with him, citing his rhetoric on Israel. In a remarkable display of hypocrisy, Piker responded by arguing that Democrats should defend "First Amendment principles."

"We must fight back against the undemocratic & unamerican forces of Trumpism, which means protecting free speech and due process, two fundamental rights Trump is actively seeking to destroy at this moment!" Piker wrote on X.

Watts was quick to highlight Piker's stunning inconsistency, recalling an instance where he had encouraged then-President Donald Trump to "lock up" a political opponent. "When Trump threatened to arrest Adam Schiff for being his political enemy, Hasan Piker said: ‘Oh my God, I hope they arrest him. Oh my God, I hope he goes to prison. Yeah, this is political. Sure. I don’t care. Lock him up. Lock him up,’" Watts reminded audiences.

Piker, who has consistently criticized Schiff over contributions from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and for his perceived inaction on U.S.-Israel ties, had also told Schiff to "suck my entire d---" in 2019, while lashing out at the senator for hosting a fundraiser with defense contractor Raytheon.

Confronted with his own words, Piker predictably dismissed his remarks about Schiff as a "joke." "I voted for him. This is a joke, you dumb---" he responded to Watts. However, another Democratic commentator immediately challenged this flimsy defense, asking, "How is it a joke? You just gonna say that for every single thing you've said? You are very clearly serious in this video."

Representatives for Piker offered no comment to requests on whether the party's base was placing enough emphasis on past online comments, or at what point such rhetoric should be disqualifying for political candidates.
