The radical fringe of the Democrat party frequently oversteps, but few display such a breathtaking misunderstanding of their role—and of basic international law—as New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani recently unveiled a deeply troubling "wish" during a New York Times interview: to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the allied leader attends the upcoming UN General Assembly in NYC.
“I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in the Hague,” Mamdani declared to Lulu Garcia-Navarro, referring to the International Criminal Court. “He’s a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court.” This statement, he claimed, is “an opinion that is held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these last many years.”
Mamdani, despite his grand pronouncements, admitted he wasn't 100 percent sure "whether he has the legal authority" for such a stunt, indicating he was still consulting with his administration's Law Department. This acknowledgment only underscores the absurdity of his public posturing.
Prime Minister Netanyahu himself wasted no time in exposing Mamdani’s true allegiances, telling a WABC radio host that the mayor's words make it abundantly clear he stands with terrorists like Hamas:
As many have pointed out, the United States is not beholden to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC possesses no jurisdiction on U.S. territory, and a local mayor like Mamdani holds no legal authority to order the arrest of a foreign head of government. But that doesn't stop him from grandstanding about it.
Enter U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, who swiftly and decisively dismantled Mamdani’s empty threats, exposing them for the "pure political theater" they truly are. Waltz laid out the indisputable facts in a concise, powerful statement:
“Mayor Mamdani: here’s why your threat to arrest PM Netanyahu’s in NYC during UNGA is not going to happen:”
“1. The U.S. is not party to the Rome Statute that underlies the ICC,”
“2. The UN Headquarters Agreement grants diplomatic protections to visiting heads of gov’t,”
“3. head-of-state immunity applies, &”
“4. federal authority trumps any local mayor’s wishes. This is pure political theater.”
This firm rebuke from a top U.S. official highlights America's unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and its allies, a principle strongly upheld by the Trump administration, which has previously sanctioned rogue ICC judges for attempting to target American military personnel and Israeli leaders.
It's a pattern with Mayor Mamdani. Just recently, his office was caught attempting to meet with the Iranian ambassador, another inexplicable foray into foreign policy by a city official.
Whether it's advocating for free public transit, government-run grocery stores, or attempting to arrest world leaders on behalf of an illegitimate global court, Mamdani consistently demonstrates a profound disconnect from the responsibilities of his office. Americans deserve leaders focused on their communities, not on international radical posturing that undermines our allies and national interests.
