Senate Delays Immigration Enforcement Bill Until June After Leaving for Memorial Day Recess

The Senate is heading into Memorial Day recess without passing the Republican-led $72 billion reconciliation package aimed at funding federal immigration enforcement, delaying one of President Donald Trump’s major priorities until at least June.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced Thursday that lawmakers would leave Washington before advancing the bill, despite Trump previously wanting the legislation on his desk by June 1. According to reports, internal Republican disagreements helped stall the package before the holiday break.

At the center of the dispute is a controversial fund that could compensate individuals claiming the legal system had been “weaponized” against them. Some Republicans have reportedly expressed concerns that the fund could potentially benefit Trump and his allies. Because apparently even within the GOP, finding unity in Washington is still harder than securing the southern border.

The delay comes as immigration enforcement remains one of the top priorities for Trump supporters, many of whom have pushed for stronger border security, expanded deportation efforts, and increased funding for federal immigration agencies.

Conservatives argue that the administration’s immigration agenda is critical to restoring law and order at the border after years of chaos and record illegal crossings. Supporters also view the reconciliation package as a key step toward giving federal authorities the resources needed to enforce existing immigration laws more aggressively.

While the Senate’s decision pushes the debate into June, pressure will likely continue building on lawmakers to deliver on border security promises that millions of voters see as essential to protecting the country.

Despite the setback, Trump’s immigration agenda remains front and center in Washington — and supporters expect Republicans to eventually deliver the enforcement measures they’ve been demanding for years.
