Organizations like StopAntisemitism and the Combat Antisemitism Movement swiftly called for Macklemore's removal, with singer Pink also publicly criticizing his performance.
During his opening set at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, Macklemore, a Grammy-winning artist, controversially described Israel’s actions using loaded terms such as "genocide" and "apartheid."
In the wake of the uproar, Sheeran released a statement clarifying that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour’s promoters and venues, not by him personally. He emphasized his commitment to the tour and to supporting his fans and crew.
However, the progressive backlash continued. Four of Sheeran’s tour openers subsequently withdrew from his concerts in a show of "solidarity" with Macklemore, citing their opposition to what they termed "genocide" in Gaza. It’s worth noting that Macklemore previously faced fierce criticism in 2014 for donning what many perceived as an antisemitic costume, though he claimed it was unintentional.
As Sheeran navigates one of the most public controversies of his career, Swift, his longtime friend and collaborator, has maintained a notable quiet. This reflects a pattern in her career where she generally, but not always, avoids political entanglements.
Swift and Sheeran share a close personal and professional relationship spanning over a decade, often described as one of modern music history’s most prominent friendships. They have consistently supported each other, collaborating both in the studio and on stage.
Sheeran even served as the opening act for the North American leg of Swift’s "Red Tour" in 2013, and they have teamed up on songs such as "Everything Has Changed" and "Run." He also made a "surprise guest" appearance during her Eras Tour.
Their bond is well-documented, from Swift publicly thanking Sheeran at the BRIT Awards in 2015 for teaching her about British culture to Sheeran making memorable appearances at her concerts, once even dressed as a clown. In 2018, Swift publicly attacked Republican Tennessee Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn over her conservative voting record and opposition to LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, throwing her support behind Blackburn’s Democratic opponent, former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.
She also did not hesitate to criticize President Donald Trump, labeling him a poor leader during the COVID-19 pandemic and making unsubstantiated accusations of cheating to win elections.
For some within the entertainment industry, this selective activism raises eyebrows. David Sams, CEO of Sams Global Companies—a conglomerate of media networks and talent management—and former head of global marketing and creative affairs at King World, believes performers should steer clear of politics.
"My general feeling is they ought to stay in their own lane," Sams told Fox News Digital. "It’s a lot of noise, and with everything going on in the world right now, to even give five seconds to their shenanigans is ridiculous."
Ironically, Swift has also, at times, faced criticism from the left for not being outspoken enough on certain issues, illustrating the impossible tightrope walk of celebrity activism.
