Trump Administration Pushes for Tougher Citizenship Test: “Too Easy Is Not Good Enough”

The Trump administration is once again delivering on its promise of extreme vetting—this time by overhauling the U.S. citizenship test, which officials say has become laughably easy. (And honestly, when six out of ten is enough to pass, that sounds less like a test for citizenship and more like a middle school pop quiz.)

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow told Axios the goal is to move toward a standardized exam that actually measures whether applicants understand America, not just memorize a few flashcards. He laid it out plainly: “We’re looking for actual understanding and ability to read and speak and write the English language; and, frankly, this test is just too easy.”

The changes could include essay-style questions like: “What does it mean to be an American?” or “Who was your favorite founding father?” Imagine that—actually requiring people to know and respect the Constitution before joining the American family. Radical, right?

Edlow also made it clear the administration is declaring war on fraud in the naturalization process. New guidance is giving adjudicators more tools to evaluate English proficiency and “good moral character”—which, despite what the left will scream, are already part of U.S. law. Trump’s team is simply making sure they’re enforced. Because yes, folks, “good moral character” should actually mean something when you’re applying to become a citizen of the greatest nation on Earth.

Multiple cases have already been referred to the Justice Department for denaturalization, with more expected. As Edlow reminded everyone: “We are a law enforcement agency. We are making a law enforcement decision when it comes to immigration enforcement.”

Here’s the bottom line: American citizenship is a privilege, not a participation trophy. Trump is making sure it stays that way—by raising the bar, not lowering it. And that’s how you protect the value of being an American.
