There’s a familiar unease that settles over parents when their children, in another room, become suddenly, unnervingly quiet. Often, it signals some impending calamity or discovered destruction. That same unsettling quiet has blanketed Virginia conservatives for months, particularly following Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger’s first tumultuous half-year in office.
After facing sharp judicial rebukes for her attempts to redraw congressional maps and push an unconstitutional gun control agenda, Spanberger seemed to retreat from the spotlight. She’s been busy patting herself on the back for initiatives started by her Republican predecessor, Glenn Youngkin, and even attempted to claim credit for President Trump’s renovation of Dulles Airport. This summer, she embarked on a taxpayer-funded international "economic trade mission" to France, Italy, and the United Kingdom – a classic political boondoggle masked as progress.
But while Virginians were distracted by foreign excursions and recycled talking points, something far more insidious was unfolding quietly back home. Governor Spanberger was stealthily restoring voting rights to tens of thousands of convicted felons across the Commonwealth.
Naturally, the Governor isn’t highlighting the ‘felons’ part. Instead, she’s cloaking her actions in the tired, divisive language of the past, claiming to have reversed a "disenfranchisement" that she labels "a shameful relic of our Jim Crow past." And, in a predictable maneuver, she pinned the blame squarely on her Republican predecessors.
Her grand announcement, complete with a siren emoji, was meant to signal triumph. But for law-abiding Virginians, that siren served as a stark warning: Spanberger is once again prioritizing convicted criminals while actively working to erode the constitutional rights of honest citizens. Much of the corporate media, ever eager to carry water for Democrats, dutifully echoed her narrative, conveniently omitting the crucial detail that these "Virginians" are, in fact, convicts.
Instead of acknowledging the opportunities handed to her by Governor Youngkin, Spanberger audaciously accused him of resurrecting Jim Crow. She declared, "I’m proud that — after contending with my predecessor's efforts to deny Virginians their fundamental rights — we have restored the rights of more than 66,000 Virginians who have served their time." She added, "These Virginians deserve the right to use their vote, make their voices heard, and be recognized as contributing citizens to our Commonwealth and country."
This is the same Governor, ironically, who has actively sought to disenfranchise law-abiding gun owners and even prevented state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials like ICE. Her administration’s relentless focus seems to be on undermining public safety and electoral integrity while simultaneously attacking the rights of Virginians who have committed no crimes.
This isn’t the first time Virginia Democrats have attempted such a sweeping maneuver. During his tenure, Spanberger’s fellow Democrat, Terry McAuliffe, famously tried to unilaterally restore voting rights to a staggering 206,000 felons at once – an overreach that was ultimately struck down by the Virginia Supreme Court.
The lesson for Virginia conservatives is clear: when radical Democrats like Governor Spanberger go silent, it’s not a sign of peace. It’s a signal that another constitutional calamity, designed to undermine law and order and subvert the integrity of our elections, is already in motion. Americans dedicated to freedom and accountability must remain vigilant, because the fight for our republic never truly rests.
