Virginia Governor Spanberger Quietly Erases Protections for Girls' Sports

In a move that caught most Virginians by surprise, Governor Abigail Spanberger's administration has quietly rolled back vital protections for girls' sports across the state. Without any public announcement, Spanberger’s team withdrew a proposed regulation designed to safeguard female athletic teams and spaces from biological males, a decision many see as a direct assault on common sense and the integrity of women's sports.

The regulation, which would have explicitly prevented biological males from competing on female-only athletic teams and entering female-designated spaces such as locker rooms and bathrooms, was summarily pulled on July 30, 2026. This critical update received little to no public attention until September, revealing a deliberate attempt by the administration to avoid scrutiny over a highly contentious issue.

Instead of a transparent announcement, the withdrawal was simply listed on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall website, a bureaucratic maneuver that allowed Spanberger to quietly dismantle protections that had been hard-won under former Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin. This action effectively halts the rulemaking process initiated to defend fair competition and privacy for young women.

The push for these protections began in April 2025 with a petition filed by courageous female athletes Réka György, Lily Mullens, and Carter Satterfield. Their plea to the Virginia State Board of Health was straightforward: adopt regulations to bar biological males from female-only athletic teams and competitions, and from intimate female spaces where women and girls are vulnerable. The Board of Health unanimously approved this petition by a 14-0 vote in August 2025, recognizing the inherent physical and psychological harms posed to women and girls by ignoring biological realities.

This latest move by Governor Spanberger directly contradicts the spirit of earlier efforts, including the Virginia High School League’s February 2025 policy change that restricted participation in girls’ sports to students whose biological sex is female. It also undermines the model policies issued by Youngkin's Department of Education in 2023, which directed public schools to generally separate athletic teams and intimate facilities based on biological sex.

The withdrawal means that the crucial regulatory framework intended to bring statewide clarity and protection to organized female sports and sex-separated spaces in Virginia has been eliminated. The fight for fairness, safety, and equal opportunity for female athletes, a cornerstone of Title IX, continues to face ideological opposition from those who prioritize radical agendas over the undeniable rights of women and girls.

As of now, Spanberger's office has remained silent, offering no explanation for a decision that impacts countless families and female athletes. This lack of accountability only further underscores the administration's questionable priorities. The people of Virginia, and indeed all Americans, deserve leaders who champion common sense and stand firmly for the protection of our daughters, not those who quietly surrender their future to a woke ideology.
