Iran announced Saturday that it is suspending its commitments under the interim deal with the United States, further unraveling a fragile ceasefire and escalating the conflict over control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated on state television that because the U.S. has violated the agreement signed about a month ago, Tehran is “no longer implementing” its obligations.

The announcement came as U.S. Central Command conducted its seventh consecutive night of strikes against Iran, hitting surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities. U.S. forces are also continuing to enforce a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The escalation has widened beyond the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian strikes hit targets in Kuwait (including a water desalination plant and oil facility), while air defenses were activated in Bahrain, Jordan, and Iraq. U.S. strikes also damaged power and desalination infrastructure in southern Iran, affecting civilian water supplies.

The interim deal, reached in June, was intended to de-escalate hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, and serve as a bridge toward a longer-term nuclear agreement. However, repeated Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and attempts to assert control over the waterway have led to sustained U.S. military pressure under President Trump.

Iran continues to insist that the strait must be under its control and that vessels should pay fees to Tehran, a position rejected by the United States and most of the international community.

The collapse of the interim agreement comes as the Trump administration maintains a strong military posture in the region, with more than 50,000 U.S. service members deployed across the Middle East. Oil prices remain elevated amid fears of prolonged disruption to global energy flows.

No immediate mediation breakthroughs were reported as both sides continue trading strikes.
