Woke NYU Students Melt Down Over Commencement Speaker Who Says Gen Z Is Coddled

A group of ultra-progressive New York University students is throwing a fit after the school selected renowned psychologist and bestselling author Jonathan Haidt to deliver the 2026 commencement address.

Haidt, a respected social psychologist and professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, has become well known for arguing that many members of Gen Z have been overprotected, emotionally fragile, and increasingly anxious due to modern social and cultural trends.

Naturally, proving his point almost immediately, a group of student government leaders launched complaints about his selection before he even reached the podium.

NYU administrators praised Haidt as one of the “most consequential scholars of the 21st century” when announcing he would speak at graduation ceremonies held Thursday at Yankee Stadium. But that didn’t stop activist-minded students from releasing a lengthy statement criticizing the decision and claiming Haidt does not “accurately reflect the values and diversity” of graduates.

The students also argued that his views demonstrate young people are being “misunderstood.”

Apparently being told you’re too sensitive is now considered a campus emergency.

Haidt has spent years studying the effects of social media, overprotective parenting, and modern campus culture on younger generations, often warning that excessive emotional coddling has contributed to rising anxiety and mental health struggles among students.

Critics of the student backlash say the controversy perfectly illustrates Haidt’s broader argument: that many universities have created environments where disagreement itself is treated as harm and where students increasingly expect ideological conformity instead of open debate.

The situation also reflects the growing frustration many Americans feel toward campus activism that attempts to silence or discredit speakers simply for expressing viewpoints outside progressive orthodoxy.

Despite the backlash, NYU stood by its decision, signaling that at least some universities may finally be rediscovering the value of intellectual diversity and free discussion. And if students are already upset before the speech even begins, Haidt might end up giving the most relevant commencement address they’ve heard in years.
