Ad Targets James Talarico’s Border Comments, Revives Debate Over Immigration Policies

A new advertisement released by the conservative nonprofit group Citizens for Sanity is putting Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico's past comments on immigration front and center, highlighting a stark contrast between his vision for border policy and the tougher enforcement approach favored by many Texas voters.

The ad features a depiction of Talarico placing a large welcome mat at the southern border emblazoned with the words “EVERYBODY IS WELCOME.” The commercial uses satire to emphasize remarks Talarico previously made regarding how the United States should approach immigration and border security.

The advertisement is based on comments Talarico made during an appearance on Politico's "The Conversation," where he described his preferred approach to immigration.

“We should treat our southern border like our front porch,” Talarico said. “We should have a giant welcome mat out front, and we should have a lock on the door.”

Yep. He actually said that.

He argued that border security and hospitality are not mutually exclusive concepts.

“Those two things are not mutually exclusive. You have a right to know who’s coming into your house, and you should be welcoming the stranger into your home and providing that hospitality,” Talarico continued.

The Senate candidate also acknowledged that Democrats have struggled to effectively communicate their immigration policies to voters.

“Clearly not well enough, because we lost the last election partly because of the issue of immigration,” he admitted.

Talarico further argued that Democrats should position themselves as the party of public safety on issues such as immigration and crime, while maintaining policies they believe serve the public interest.

The new ad seeks to challenge that message by portraying Talarico's comments as evidence of a more permissive approach to border enforcement than many Texans support.

Immigration remains one of the most significant political issues in Texas and across the nation. Republicans have consistently criticized the immigration policies implemented during former President Joe Biden's administration, arguing that they contributed to record levels of illegal border crossings and strained local communities.

Critics of Talarico point to his previous statements regarding immigration enforcement, including remarks in which he referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a “secret police force.” They also highlight comments he made as a former public-school teacher about immigrant students.

Supporters, meanwhile, argue that Talarico's comments reflect an effort to balance border security with humanitarian considerations and legal immigration pathways.

The advertisement illustrates how immigration is likely to remain a defining issue in the Texas Senate race. In a state where border security consistently ranks among voters' top concerns, even a few words about a "welcome mat" can quickly become a campaign centerpiece. As political strategists know all too well, metaphors have a habit of following candidates long after the interview ends.

With the election approaching, both parties are expected to continue making immigration a central focus of their campaigns. For Republicans, the issue remains a powerful argument for stronger enforcement. For Democrats, it presents an ongoing challenge to convince voters they can support border security while maintaining a more compassionate approach to immigration policy.

As the race intensifies, Talarico's own words are likely to remain at the center of the debate.
