Somali World Cup Referee Receives Hero’s Welcome After U.S. Entry Denial

A Somali referee who was set to make history at the World Cup returned home to a warm reception in Mogadishu on Wednesday after being denied entry to the United States and subsequently removed from the tournament's officiating roster.

Omar Artan, widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading soccer referees, was welcomed by supporters and officials in Somalia’s capital following an incident that prevented him from participating in the upcoming World Cup.

Artan had been selected by FIFA to serve as an official at the tournament, a milestone that would have made him the first referee from Somalia to officiate at a World Cup. His selection followed a highly successful career, including being named Africa’s best male referee in 2025.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Artan was denied entry at Miami International Airport on Saturday due to what officials described as “vetting concerns.” No additional details regarding those concerns were publicly released.

Following the decision, FIFA removed Artan from its final referee list for the tournament.

Despite the disappointment, Artan struck an optimistic tone upon his return to Somalia. Speaking to supporters, he encouraged young Somalis to take pride in their country and expressed confidence that he would have another opportunity to officiate at a future World Cup.

The situation has drawn international attention because of Artan’s status as a pioneering figure in Somali sports. His rise to the top ranks of international officiating has been viewed by many as a symbol of progress and achievement for the country.

At the same time, U.S. officials emphasized that border security and vetting procedures remain an important part of determining entry into the country. While the specific reasons behind the decision have not been disclosed, authorities maintained that the denial was based on established screening processes.

For supporters in Somalia, however, the focus remained on celebrating Artan’s accomplishments rather than dwelling on the setback. His reception in Mogadishu reflected the pride many citizens feel in seeing a Somali official reach the highest levels of international sports.

Though his World Cup opportunity was cut short this time, Artan made clear that he intends to continue pursuing his career at the highest level. And judging by the reception he received at home, many Somalis believe his story is far from over.

Good for him, we suppose, but if you seem to support violent groups and terrorism, we don't want you near America. Thank you.
