America First Victory: Trump Admin Slams Door on Biden-Era Chinese Visa Loophole Exploiting U.S. Citizenship

In a decisive move championed by conservatives, the Trump administration has taken a firm stand to secure America's borders and protect national interests, suspending a dangerous visa-free travel program for Chinese nationals that fueled birth tourism and posed undeniable national security risks.

This critical decision, attributed to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, directly targets a problematic program from the Biden era that allowed prescreened Chinese nationals to visit the Northern Mariana Islands for up to 14 days without requiring a visa. It's a clear signal that the days of lax policies jeopardizing American sovereignty are over.

The Department of Homeland Security's announcement laid bare serious concerns: the program facilitated birth tourism, opened doors for espionage, and risked illegal onward travel to nearby Guam, a crucial hub for the U.S. military. The implications for national security were simply too dire to ignore.

This suspension follows urgent calls from stalwart Republican lawmakers who had tirelessly warned of these dangers. Senators Mike Lee, R-Utah, Rick Scott, R-Fla., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Bill Cassidy, R-La., had pressed for the program's termination in April, recognizing its perilous encouragement of birth tourism and the looming national security threats it presented.

The swift action was met with strong praise from Capitol Hill. Senator Lee, celebrating the decision on X, declared unequivocally: "America is not a nursery for the CCP to steal citizenship. Thank you, President Trump!"

Representative Chip Roy's press office also lauded the move, noting that the Texas Republican, alongside Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., had raised alarms about the program back in March. His office posted on X: "Rep. Roy is pleased to hear the Trump Admin closed this dangerous loophole."

For too long, the practice of "birth tourism" — individuals traveling to the United States solely to give birth and exploit citizenship laws for their children — has been allowed to fester. Many have cunningly concealed their true intentions, circumventing legitimate visa processes.

The program in question, established under a previous administration, and which had seen significant utilization, had been exploited by over 3,000 Chinese nationals in a recent fiscal year to enter the Northern Mariana Islands. While these travelers underwent some screening by Customs and Border Protection, the critical safeguard of obtaining a visa through a U.S. consulate was bypassed — a loophole now firmly sealed.

The suspension is scheduled to take effect at 2 p.m. EDT on October 30. It will apply to all new applicants and those previously approved, though current visitors may complete their authorized stays. For future visits, a proper visa will be required, ensuring genuine vetting.

DHS stated the suspension will remain in place as the department, in collaboration with the secretaries of state and the interior, conducts a comprehensive evaluation. This ensures that the program cannot be weaponized against American interests.

Department officials explicitly warned that this specific program significantly lowered barriers for Chinese nationals to travel to the territory for the sole purpose of birth tourism. As the notice detailed, "While birth tourism has long been an issue in the CNMI, the availability of visa-exempt travel and reduced vetting under EVS-TAP may lower barriers to this practice." This practice not only strains the islands' medical systems but fundamentally undermines the integrity of American citizenship.

Beyond birth tourism, the threat of intelligence gathering near vital U.S. military facilities — including Tinian Air Base and several installations on Guam — loomed large. The convenience of visa-free travel was a glaring vulnerability, easily exploited by hostile actors.

Though the program was not supposed to permit travel to Guam or the U.S. mainland, DHS cited past incidents of Chinese nationals being smuggled by boat from the Northern Mariana Islands to Guam. These cases, while linked to earlier policies, underscored a persistent vulnerability that this Biden-era loophole failed to address.

This decisive action is part of a broader, sustained crackdown on birth tourism by the Trump administration. A State Department task force, initiated on August 12, had already revoked over 750 visas tied to suspected birth tourism activity by late August. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott confirmed that officials are actively collaborating with international partners and law enforcement to dismantle these exploitative networks.

As Mr. Pigott highlighted, these networks often coach visitors on how to conceal their true intentions and even evade paying medical bills — a direct affront to American taxpayers and healthcare providers. The Trump administration's resolve ensures that America's borders are not just lines on a map, but a bulwark against those who seek to exploit our laws and undermine our national security for their own gain.
