Biden Left Him to Rot: Trump's Direct Call Frees American Teacher From Russian Captivity

In a striking display of America First diplomacy, former President Donald J. Trump has once again cut through bureaucratic red tape and diplomatic stagnation, securing the release of an American citizen from Russian captivity – a feat the Biden Administration conspicuously failed to achieve for years.

Stephen Hubbard, a retired U.S. teacher, found himself languishing in a Russian prison for four years, locked up on dubious charges of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. His plight, largely ignored or mishandled by current leadership, became a testament to the glaring difference in how a true American President operates on the world stage.

The breakthrough came not from endless, fruitless negotiations by the Biden State Department, but from a direct telephone conversation between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin just last week. The news broke via a Truth Social post issued by President Trump, highlighting the stark contrast in approach and outcome.

"Stephen Hubbard, taken four years ago by Russia during the Biden Administration, was just released from prison, at the request of President Donald J. Trump, made directly to President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation last week," President Trump's post declared. The statement continued, exposing the weakness of the current administration: "The United States, out of respect for President Trump, was not required to give anything in return — an unprecedented situation for Russia. There was no ‘swap’ necessary for this release. This major return should have taken place long ago through the Biden Administration, which got nowhere in its negotiations with the Kremlin. Stephen is on his way back home. 'Welcome home Stephen, it’s great to have you back,'"

Stephen Hubbard

The former Michigan teacher, 72, had been sentenced in 2024 to nearly seven years imprisonment. Russian prosecutors claimed he signed a contract with the Ukrainian military after the 2022 invasion and was captured two months later. Yet, for years, this American citizen remained in a foreign jail, seemingly an afterthought for an administration preoccupied with everything but the well-being of its own people.

President Trump didn't mince words about the contrast with the current White House. Another Truth Social post noted, "Biden should have done the Hubbard release long ago! What a difference a President makes!" And there it is: common sense dictates that when America has strong leadership, its citizens are prioritized, not left to rot.

Steve Witkoff

Even U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, speaking during a meeting with President Putin, acknowledged the humanitarian aspect of the release, stating of Hubbard, "because of you, he's going home to his family." He went on to describe Putin as a "humanitarian" for releasing the 75-year-old man, a clear diplomatic gesture facilitated by Trump's direct engagement.

This victory for an American citizen underscores a fundamental truth: strong, decisive leadership is not merely about rhetoric; it's about results. While the Biden administration fumbled and failed, President Trump demonstrated the power of direct, unyielding negotiation, bringing an American home without concessions. It's a clear reminder of what America First truly means – putting American citizens first, always, and demonstrating to the world that when a genuine leader is at the helm, America does not leave its own behind.
