A shocking scene unfolded Saturday afternoon in Iberia Parish when a vehicle drove into a crowd attending a Lao New Year parade, leaving at least 15 people injured—some critically.
The incident occurred during celebrations near Savannaket Street and Melancon Road in Broussard, turning what should have been a cultural festival into a moment of chaos and fear.
What Happened
According to authorities, the driver—identified as 57-year-old Todd Landry—allegedly drove his vehicle into a group of pedestrians during the parade. Witnesses described a disturbing sequence of events, saying the car slowly approached the crowd before suddenly accelerating.
One eyewitness said he initially believed the driver was joining the parade:
“He inched closer and closer, revved his engine again, and just plowed through everybody… I just thought, ‘Is this actually happening?’”
Injuries and Response
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, transporting victims to nearby hospitals. Several individuals were reported to be in critical condition, though exact details on their status have not yet been fully released.
Arrest and Charges
The Louisiana State Police confirmed that Landry showed signs of impairment and submitted a breath test with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.137—well above the legal limit.
He was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including:
- Driving while impaired (1st offense)
- First-degree negligent injuring (18 counts)
- Careless operation
- Open container violation
He is currently being held in the Iberia Parish jail.
Ongoing Investigation
The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. Officials have stated that, based on preliminary findings, the incident does not appear to be intentional, though the case remains active.
Authorities are also asking anyone with photos or videos of the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
Festival Reaction
Organizers of the Lao New Year Festival expressed deep sorrow following the incident and made the decision to cancel evening music events out of respect for the victims.
