The critical exchange unfolded during King's interview with juror Paula Devlin. King, seemingly focused on demographic profiles, probed Devlin about the jury's makeup.
"I'm curious about the jurors themselves, because we know it was nine women, three men. What was the age range, what was the racial makeup? I haven't heard any of that. What was it?" King pressed.
Devlin responded plainly: "Um, 70-ish to 22. One person of color, and then everybody else was white. A lot of the jurors had children."
King continued, her line of questioning becoming increasingly pointed: "Uh-huh. And -- one person of color -- was the person of color a woman or a man?"
"A man," Devlin confirmed.
King paused, then, with apparent disbelief in her voice, directly asked, "Is the holdout juror a person of-- a Black man?"
"Yes," Devlin stated.
King, seemingly unable to process the answer, reiterated, "A Black man is the holdout juror?"
"Yes," Devlin affirmed once more.
