Melat Kiros, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), made these stunning remarks last week at a Wa’Ela Tigrai event in Denver. Kiros, who recently unseated long-time incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary, painted a stark picture of a United States she believes requires a "reckoning" with its place on the global stage.
Drawing inspiration from the far-left "Squad" in the House, Kiros argued for a complete overhaul of the global order. Her proposed solution? Electing individuals who, according to her, understand America's alleged "exploitation" at a "fundamental level."
"There's a certain reckoning that we are going to have to have with the global world order as it exists today and the way that it fundamentally will have to shift going forward," Kiros declared. "The responsibility that we have as Americans, the recognition that is going to be required of us, of the exploitative and extractive nature that we play on the global scale and the global stage is only going to be challenged if we are getting represented by people who understand that on a fundamental level."
This, she clarified, means aggressively pushing a specific demographic into power. "And that means getting more immigrants into office. That means getting more people who have heritage in the global south into office because that's where those decisions are made specifically," Kiros asserted, openly advocating for a transformation of American leadership based on ethnicity and perceived anti-American sentiment.
Kiros is not an isolated case; she is part of a wave of DSA-endorsed candidates who have successfully challenged and defeated incumbent Democrats in recent primary elections for the 2026 midterms, showcasing the growing radicalization within the Democrat Party.
The candidate's anti-capitalist stance is equally clear. Reflecting on her experience as an attorney, Kiros claimed the American legal system is "not broken, that it's actually working exactly as it was designed to." This cynical view, she suggested, initially "broke her spirit" before she resolved to "fight and to never give up" against the system she decries.
Further highlighting her radical leanings, Kiros was previously terminated from her position at the Sidley Austin law firm in 2023. Her firing followed the publication of an open letter in which she criticized law firms, including her own, for calling for action against antisemitism on college campuses.
