Death Penalty Sought: Terrorist Co-Pilot Targeted Tel Aviv in Mid-Air Horror

A radical terrorist co-pilot who attempted to plunge a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv jetliner into a suicide dive is now facing the ultimate consequence: the death penalty. Reports from Israeli outlet Ynet, citing a top Emirati official, reveal that Abu Dhabi authorities are poised to seek the maximum sentence for 29-year-old Hamam al-Hammami following a terrifying mid-air nightmare aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073.

This is no mere criminal act; investigators suspect al-Hammami harbored a chilling ambition: to orchestrate a 9/11-style Kamikaze attack, aiming his Boeing 737 MAX 8 directly at Tel Aviv’s iconic Azrieli Towers. The world was spared an unspeakable tragedy only through sheer grit and the heroic actions of those aboard.

The horror unfolded with shocking speed. Al-Hammami, in an act of calculated savagery, used the cockpit’s own emergency crash axe to hack Captain Smit Machchhar. The terrorist then seized control, pulling the aircraft into a death spiral, plummeting an astonishing 14,000 feet in just thirty seconds. But Captain Machchhar, bleeding and battered, fought back with incredible resolve. He managed to force open the reinforced cockpit door just as Israeli passengers stormed in to confront the assailant.

Among those passengers was Yaniv Hion, whose quick thinking and bravery averted catastrophe. Hion wrestled the terrorist away from the controls and, remarkably, began to bring the plane out of its deadly dive. An off-duty pilot was then rushed into the cockpit to guide the aircraft to a miraculous emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

“When I got inside, I saw the attacker on the controls, between the two seats,” Hion recalled, painting a vivid picture of the chaos. “There were no pilots in the seats. One was down, and the attacker was on the controls. Another person came in with me. I grabbed the attacker, put him in a chokehold, and first of all pulled him out. … He was trying to destroy the controls in order to disable the plane. That’s what I saw.”

The multi-nation investigation is now in full swing, with Mossad operatives and Israeli aviation experts joining intelligence agents from Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the U.S. in Abu Dhabi to interrogate al-Hammami. The focus is not just on the attack itself, but on the deeply disturbing security failures that allowed a known radical to access the cockpit.

New details emerging about al-Hammami’s past paint a clear picture of a ticking time bomb. Oman Air had previously barred him from flying due to concerns over his extremist views, specifically linked to visits to radical Islamic websites, according to Fox News. He was reportedly shunted into an administrative role at the airline. In 2025, he completed three months of pre-employment training with Royal Air Maroc but was wisely not hired. Yet, somehow, he found his way to Flydubai, where he worked for less than a year. His hiring checks, we are told, focused on criminal records, glaringly omitting the crucial red flags of radicalization.

An Israeli official highlighted further egregious oversights, noting this was al-Hammami’s first flight into Israel. This raises critical questions about why an Omani pilot was assigned to a route explicitly barred by Israel’s agreement with Flydubai for pilots from countries without diplomatic ties. An Emirati source admitted that a “global pilot shortage” had led airlines to rush hiring checks, calling this catastrophic oversight a “very serious failure.” And there it is. The consequences of prioritizing speed over vigilance, convenience over national security, almost cost hundreds of lives.

Israel, taking decisive action, is now tightening crew screenings on all incoming foreign flights. This terrifying incident serves as a stark reminder: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism remains persistent and cunning. An America First approach demands unwavering vigilance, rigorous security, and uncompromising justice for those who seek to destroy innocent lives and American allies. The UAE’s forceful stance in seeking the death penalty for al-Hammami sends a clear, unambiguous message that such acts of terror will be met with the full, righteous fury of the law.
