Democrat AGs Rush to Court Over Trump’s Mail-In Voting Crackdown

A coalition of Democrat attorneys general from 22 states, along with the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, announced Friday they are suing President Donald Trump over his latest executive order aimed at tightening mail-in voting rules. Because, apparently, asking for stricter oversight is now grounds for a legal showdown.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boston, is just the latest in a growing pile of challenges from Democratic officials and voting rights groups targeting the order Trump signed earlier this week. The pushback was quick—and not exactly surprising.

New York Attorney General Letitia James didn’t hold back, stating that no president has the authority to “rewrite the rules” of elections on his own. Strong words, though critics might argue that ensuring election integrity isn’t exactly rewriting the rules—it’s reinforcing them.

Trump, for his part, has been consistent on this issue for years. Following his 2020 election loss, which he has repeatedly said was impacted by widespread voter fraud, he has pushed for tighter controls on mail-in voting. This latest executive order reflects that stance, focusing on verifying voter eligibility and strengthening oversight.

The order directs federal agencies to compile lists of confirmed U.S. citizens eligible to vote in each state and use federal data to assist in verification. It also requires the U.S. Postal Service to deliver ballots only to individuals on approved state mail-in lists, while mandating that election-related records be preserved for five years.

Opponents argue that these measures violate the Constitution and interfere with states’ control over elections. They also claim the changes could force states to overhaul their systems too quickly ahead of upcoming elections, potentially creating confusion.

But supporters see it differently: a push for accountability, transparency, and confidence in the electoral process—something many Americans have been calling for. And while the legal battles are just getting started, one thing is clear—Trump isn’t backing down from his commitment to election integrity, and that’s a conversation that isn’t going away anytime soon.
