Democratic Candidate Under Scrutiny After Reported Past Ties to Al-Qaida-Linked Group

A New Jersey Democratic House candidate backed by Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing renewed scrutiny after a report alleging past involvement with an organization later linked to Al-Qaida.

According to Jewish Insider, candidate Adam Hamawy volunteered in the 1990s for the Benevolence International Foundation (BIF), a nonprofit that was later shut down after international investigations connected it to extremist financing networks.

The report cites a 1996 interview in which Hamawy said he helped distribute humanitarian supplies in Bosnia two years earlier on behalf of the group. Archival reporting from the Newark Star-Ledger was also referenced as part of the outlet’s findings.

U.S. authorities and the United Nations later identified the Illinois-based organization as a covert funding channel tied to Al-Qaida, including networks associated with Osama bin Laden prior to the September 11 attacks.

The revelations have prompted renewed political attention given Hamawy’s current candidacy and support from prominent Democratic figures, including Rep. Ilhan Omar. Supporters of transparency argue voters deserve a full accounting of any past associations connected to organizations later deemed problematic by international investigators.

As the story circulates, it adds another layer of controversy to an already competitive political environment in New Jersey, where scrutiny over candidates’ backgrounds continues to intensify ahead of the upcoming election cycle.

For now, the report raises more questions than answers — and voters will ultimately decide how much weight, if any, such past associations should carry in the present political landscape.
