Democratic Socialist Nithya Raman Projected to Defeat Karen Bass in Los Angeles Mayoral Race

Democratic Socialist Nithya Raman has been projected to defeat incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, marking a major political setback for the city’s establishment Democratic leadership.

Decision Desk HQ projected Raman as the winner Wednesday night, approximately 24 hours after polls closed. At the time of the projection, Raman held 51.67 percent of the vote compared with Bass’s 48.3 percent.

Bass entered the election with endorsements from prominent mainstream Democrats, but her political standing suffered following the devastating 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles. Questions about the city’s emergency response and subsequent handling of an official after-action report became a major source of controversy.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the Los Angeles Fire Department’s after-action report underwent multiple deletions and revisions that presented a less critical account of the department’s response.

Among the changes, officials removed language acknowledging that the decision not to fully staff and pre-deploy available crews and engines ahead of an extreme wind forecast “did not align” with department policies and procedures for red-flag conditions.

Another deleted passage stated that some firefighting crews waited more than an hour for assignments on the day of the fire. A section originally titled “failures” was renamed “primary challenges,” while language indicating that crews and department leaders had violated national guidelines intended to prevent firefighter deaths and injuries was removed.

The report’s revisions reportedly extended beyond its findings. An early draft, overseen by then-interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva after Bass fired Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, included suggestions to replace a cover photograph showing flaming palm trees with a more positive image of firefighters working. As many as seven drafts were reportedly produced before the final report was published.

A subsequent Los Angeles Times investigation reported that Bass directed changes intended to soften the report’s criticism, particularly concerning the failure to fully staff and pre-deploy fire engines ahead of dangerous winds. Bass denied ordering the revisions, although two sources cited by the newspaper indicated otherwise.

The controversy added to mounting questions about the city’s preparedness and leadership during one of the most consequential disasters in Los Angeles history.

Raman’s projected victory now signals a change in leadership for the nation’s second-largest city. As a Democratic Socialist, she represents a more ideologically progressive wing of the Democratic Party than the incumbent she defeated.

For Bass, the result marks a striking political defeat after the wildfire controversy overshadowed her administration. For Los Angeles residents, the incoming mayor will inherit the difficult task of addressing the aftermath of the fires, restoring public confidence, and confronting the city’s longstanding challenges.
