Several prominent Democrats are distancing themselves from Rep. Eric Swalwell following serious sexual assault allegations reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Sens. Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego announced they are withdrawing their endorsements of Swalwell’s gubernatorial bid after reviewing the report, which details accusations from an unnamed former staffer.
According to the woman, who began working for Swalwell at age 21, the congressman allegedly pursued her and sent explicit messages, including requests for nude photos. She further claims that in multiple instances involving alcohol, she was subjected to non-consensual sexual encounters.
One alleged incident from September 2019 describes the woman becoming heavily intoxicated after drinks with Swalwell and later waking up naked in a hotel bed with signs of sexual activity she does not recall consenting to. A separate allegation from April 2024 recounts another encounter after a charity event, where she says she resisted his advances and told him “no.”
In response, Schiff stated he was “deeply distressed” by the allegations and emphasized that the accuser should be taken seriously. He also called on Swalwell to withdraw from the race.
Former Rep. Katie Porter, another candidate in California’s gubernatorial race, described the allegations as “horrifying” and voiced support for those coming forward.
As of now, Swalwell has not publicly addressed the accusations in detail. The situation remains developing, with growing political fallout as more figures respond to the claims.
