Deported Illegal Alien Faces Death Penalty in Florida Murder, Sanctuary City Escape Route Exposed

LAKE COUNTY, FL – A stark reminder of the deadly consequences of open border policies and the dangerous shield of sanctuary cities has emerged from Florida, where prosecutors are now seeking the death penalty for an illegal alien accused of a brutal murder.

Shahidul Islam, a 44-year-old Bangladeshi national, had already been deported from the United States, yet somehow managed to re-enter, allegedly committing premeditated first-degree murder before attempting to flee to the perceived safety of a sanctuary city.

A Lake County, Florida, grand jury indicted Islam this week for the May 2, 2024, shooting death of his sister-in-law, Monica Islam. The horrifying details paint a grim picture: Monica Islam was found on the side of the road with a gunshot wound to the head just hours after her disappearance.

According to State Attorney Bill Gladson of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, Monica Islam was last seen heading toward Shahidul Islam's vehicle. Investigators soon uncovered a trail of disturbing evidence, including "suspicious" online searches made by Islam on the very morning of the killing.

A subsequent search warrant revealed bloodstains in Islam's car, confirmed to match Monica Islam's DNA. Further evidence included a bullet lodged in the passenger door and a shattered passenger window, all pointing directly to the gruesome events that transpired.

Following the heinous act, Shahidul Islam rented a car and immediately fled to New York City, a jurisdiction notorious for its sanctuary policies, which often create havens for those seeking to evade justice. This brazen escape attempt underscores the alarming reality that such policies do not just protect individuals from deportation but can, in tragic cases like this, provide cover for violent criminals.

Thanks to the determined efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, Islam was eventually tracked down. After facing prosecution and sentencing for his unlawful re-entry into the U.S. – a crime in itself that should never have been possible – he was extradited back to Lake County, where he is now held without bond at the Detention Facility.

State Attorney Bill Gladson

State Attorney Gladson's office announced Wednesday their intent to pursue the death penalty, a necessary measure given the "severe nature of the crime and its impact on the victim's family." This firm stance sends a clear message: Florida will not tolerate such depravity, especially from those who have no legal right to be in the country.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia sharply condemned the situation. "No family should ever have to endure the pain of such a senseless and horrific act of violence as this one," Ingoglia stated. "Shahidul Islam illegally entered our country after being deported, committed this heinous crime, and then fled to a sanctuary city."

Ingoglia affirmed Florida's unwavering commitment: "Florida will continue to stand firm against violent crime, sanctuary cities and illegal immigration. We will never apologize for putting the safety of law-abiding families first." And there it is: a clear declaration that common sense and public safety will always trump reckless, open-border ideologies.

Gladson emphasized his office's resolve, stating that while "no prosecution can restore the life that was taken," they intend to "pursue justice on their behalf and hold this offender accountable to the fullest extent of the law." This case is a stark reminder of the urgent need for secure borders and the accountability of all who commit crimes on American soil, regardless of their immigration status.
