The situation in Minneapolis continues to spiral, and this time the facts are impossible to ignore. On Wednesday evening, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was ambushed and violently assaulted while attempting to arrest a dangerous illegal alien, according to the Department of Homeland Security. This is what “sanctuary” politics look like in the real world.
DHS reported that around 6:50 p.m., federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop of an illegal alien from Venezuela who had been released into the United States in 2022. Instead of complying, the suspect fled in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. After a foot chase, an ICE agent caught up with him—only to be met with immediate violence.
As the officer struggled with the suspect on the ground, two additional individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and joined the attack, striking the agent with a snow shovel and a broom handle. So much for “love is love.” The attackers allowed the illegal alien to break free and continue assaulting the officer with the tools, turning the arrest into a coordinated ambush.
Fearing for his life while being attacked by three individuals, the ICE agent fired defensive shots, striking the suspect in the leg. The three suspects then fled back into the apartment and barricaded themselves before eventually being taken into custody. Both the ICE agent and the Venezuelan national were transported to the hospital. Their conditions were not disclosed.
What followed was just as telling as the attack itself. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered a speech filled with political rhetoric about reclaiming communities and ending “chaos,” yet failed to mention a single word about the ICE agent who DHS says was ambushed and nearly beaten to death while doing his job. Silence, it seems, is reserved for law enforcement.
DHS did not mince words, stating that this attack occurred while Governor Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have been actively encouraging organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement. According to DHS, assaults on federal officers have increased by an astonishing 1,300%, as agents continue risking their lives to arrest criminals and enforce the law.
This incident lays bare the consequences of reckless political rhetoric and policies that demonize law enforcement while protecting criminals. The ICE agent did exactly what he was trained to do—and survived. Under President Donald Trump, federal officers are being backed, not abandoned, and the message is clear: attacking law enforcement will not be tolerated.
Despite the chaos being fueled at the local level, accountability is still possible. And as long as federal agents are allowed to do their jobs, the rule of law still has a fighting chance.
