President Donald Trump hosted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the White House on Thursday for a lengthy private meeting focused largely on trade, tariffs, and future negotiations between the two nations.
Following the roughly three-hour closed-door discussion, Trump described the meeting as “very productive” in a post on Truth Social.
“Just concluded my meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the very dynamic President of Brazil,” Trump wrote. “We discussed many topics, including Trade and, specifically, Tariffs. The meeting went very well.”
Trump also noted that representatives from both countries would continue discussions in upcoming meetings over the next several months.
The Brazilian president arrived at the White House shortly before noon EST before both delegations entered the private meeting. According to Brazilian media outlets, Lula was accompanied by five ministers as well as the director-general of Brazil’s Federal Police.
Despite the major diplomatic meeting, no joint press conference was held afterward — a noticeable change from the original schedule.
According to reports from Brazilian outlet UOL, the press conference was quietly canceled at Lula’s request. The change reportedly came after Lula experienced “discomfort” during a previous interaction with Trump at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Apparently someone realized stepping in front of cameras with Trump without preparation can turn into a very long afternoon very quickly.
Brazilian officials reportedly preferred that Lula speak to reporters after the meeting rather than beforehand. Following the White House visit, Lula headed to the Brazilian embassy in Washington, where he was expected to address the press later Thursday.
While details of the private discussions remain limited, the meeting signals Trump’s continued focus on strengthening economic negotiations and trade leverage with major international partners. Even when dealing with left-wing leaders like Lula, Trump continues emphasizing tariffs, economic leverage, and direct negotiations — areas that became central to his America First agenda during his presidency.
The meeting also highlights Trump’s willingness to engage with leaders across the political spectrum while still prioritizing U.S. economic interests. Unlike previous administrations that often buried trade disputes under endless diplomatic language, Trump has consistently approached international negotiations with a businessman’s mindset: focus on results, protect American industries, and make sure the United States is not getting taken advantage of.
And regardless of political differences between the two leaders, the fact that discussions remained focused on trade and economic issues shows that under Trump, America continues negotiating from a position of strength.
