Eight Transgender and Nonbinary Democrats Win Legislative Races Across the United States

Eight transgender and nonbinary Democrats won legislative races in Tuesday’s elections, including victories in Alabama, Montana, and Georgia. Seven secured seats in state legislatures, while Delaware Representative Sarah McBride won reelection to Congress.

The newly elected lawmakers are Allison Montgomery of Alabama, McBride of Delaware, Jaelynn Scott of Washington, Joanna Whaley of Michigan, Bentley Hudgins of Georgia, Zooey Zephyr of Montana, Leigh Finke of Minnesota, and Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford of Wisconsin.

In Alabama, Montgomery defeated Republican incumbent Phillip Rigsby in House District 25, becoming the state’s first openly transgender legislator. Preliminary results showed Montgomery receiving 53.2 percent of the vote, compared with Rigsby’s 46.7 percent.

Montana’s Zooey Zephyr secured another term representing House District 95 in the Missoula area. Running unopposed, Zephyr received 4,761 votes, accounting for 100 percent of the votes cast in the race.

In Georgia, Bentley Hudgins won House District 90, a heavily Democratic district near Atlanta. Hudgins received 27,921 votes, or 92.5 percent, defeating Republican candidate Samantha Boston, who received 2,280 votes, or 7.5 percent. The victory made Hudgins Georgia’s first openly transgender and nonbinary legislator.

The victories add to the number of transgender and nonbinary lawmakers serving in state legislatures and Congress. Meanwhile, McBride’s reelection ensures her continued representation of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The results reflect the diversity of candidates who secured victories across the country during the 2026 election cycle.
