The scandal erupted when Democratic New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill's office disclosed a shocking revelation: a "serious software error" had inexplicably registered roughly 6,600 non-citizens as voters between June 2023 and June 2024. Even more alarming, state authorities admitted that "fewer than 400" of these illegal registrants had actually cast ballots in various elections. Governor Sherrill, predictably, attempted to deflect blame onto the administration of her predecessor, Governor Phil Murphy, while pledging to remove the illegal registrations – a move that comes far too late for the integrity of past elections.
On CNN’s "State of the Union," Dana Bash directly challenged Jeffries, asking, “Democrats have repeatedly said that non-citizen voting doesn’t happen. It happened. Is this a problem?” Jeffries, rather than acknowledging the gravity of the situation, launched into a dismissive reply, claiming confidence in "state and local authorities" to ensure "free and fair elections." Meanwhile, on "Fox News Sunday," Democratic Virginia Senator Tim Kaine offered his own perplexing explanation for the New Jersey debacle. He argued, "Importantly, it wasn’t that individuals were trying to vote illegally," instead blaming a "computer glitch" that mistakenly classified non-citizens as eligible voters when they registered for driver’s licenses. Curiously, Kaine then advocated for state-level voter ID laws, noting that Virginia’s system has "worked." Yet, he simultaneously dismissed any demand for a federal voter ID mandate, preferring to leave such critical security measures to individual states. This selective embrace of election security, only when it suits a particular narrative, speaks volumes about the left's inconsistent approach to safeguarding the ballot box.
