For a candidate vying for the governor's office, such a pivot begs the question: is this a genuine evolution of thought, or simply a transparent attempt to shed politically toxic positions as election season heats up?

Hong, a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and a leading Democratic candidate, rose to notoriety not only for her far-left legislative agenda but also for a series of controversial social media pronouncements. Among these were her explicit calls to "cancel Thanksgiving" due to its 'colonial history' and her incendiary declaration that "police exist to uphold white supremacy," asserting, "I support defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police."

Yet, in a recent appearance on the 'Pod Save America' podcast, when pressed on how her views had "evolved since 2020," Hong offered a starkly different narrative. Her response was clear: "My views have only become stronger in that I’m serious about public safety and I will not abolish the police."

Apparently, common sense needed a permission slip. Hong went on to explain, "My views are that people are struggling right now and need basic needs met, and I want to focus on stopping violent crime and giving law enforcement the resources and the training that they need, but ensure we are also holding accountable law enforcement that does not follow the law."

When directly asked if she still believed police exist to uphold white supremacy, her answer was a quick, unequivocal "No." It’s a remarkable turnaround from statements that once positioned her firmly with the most extreme elements of the 'defund the police' movement.

Hong attributed this sudden clarity to "more conversations with people who are more directly connected to the problems," claiming she's "learned that it is most important for a public servant like myself to make sure we’re looking at sensible, practical solutions that will help keep communities safe." This explanation, while convenient, fails to account for the depth of her previous convictions and the radical nature of her past advocacy.

Her past radicalism isn't limited to law enforcement. Hong also characterized her previous aspiration for a "world without prisons" as "more aspirational," a subtle but telling shift from her earlier, more definitive pronouncements. Furthermore, resurfaced posts reveal a pattern of divisive rhetoric, including a 2019 comment about encountering "too many old white people who didn’t think we spoke English" at a restaurant, and her infamous call to "Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621. If it takes a worldwide pandemic for us to realize we should stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed indigenous folx [sic] and women, so be it."

Asked about canceling Thanksgiving in a recent CNN appearance, Hong offered a similarly circuitous explanation, speaking of her chef background and the meal’s dual nature, concluding that "views can evolve."

The sudden embrace of "public safety" and the disavowal of extreme, anti-police rhetoric by a leading socialist candidate highlights a growing trend among the radical left. As their poll numbers falter and the consequences of their anti-law enforcement policies become painfully clear to everyday Americans, these candidates often attempt to whitewash their past. But voters deserve genuine accountability and a clear, consistent commitment to law and order, not a politically calculated flip-flop designed to win votes.
