Eric Swalwell Opposes Release of Files Related to Alleged Chinese Spy Ties

Eric Swalwell said he is strongly opposed to the release of documents concerning his past interactions with Christine Fang, arguing that making the files public would represent an abuse of power.

Swalwell’s response followed a cease-and-desist letter sent to Kash Patel, in which he threatened legal action if the FBI releases materials tied to the matter. The controversy stems from reports about Fang, who was previously alleged to have connections to Chinese intelligence efforts.

Speaking in a media interview, Swalwell stated that the issue dates back roughly a decade and emphasized that he cooperated with investigators at the time. He said the matter had already been reviewed during the administration of Barack Obama and claimed no wrongdoing was found. According to Swalwell, reopening or publicizing the information now would be politically motivated.

Swalwell’s legal team reportedly warned that releasing the files could be comparable to past controversies involving J. Edgar Hoover, referencing historical concerns about misuse of investigative powers. Swalwell echoed this argument, suggesting that such an action would risk politicizing federal law enforcement.

The issue also intersects with earlier political decisions. In 2023, Kevin McCarthy removed Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee, citing concerns related to the reported relationship with Fang. Swalwell has consistently denied any misconduct and argued that the move was politically driven.

During his remarks, Swalwell also expressed broader concerns about civil liberties and the potential use of federal agencies against political opponents. He warned that releasing the files could set a precedent affecting democratic processes and public trust in institutions.

The situation remains unresolved, with debate continuing over transparency, national security considerations, and the boundaries of political accountability.
