Europe Wakes Up: Parliament Targets Muslim Brotherhood as Terror Threat, Echoing Trump-Era Resolve

In a potentially pivotal moment for European security, the European Parliament has voted to support adding organizations and individuals tied to the Muslim Brotherhood to the European Union’s terrorist list. The sweeping resolution signals a long-overdue commitment to combating radical Islamist influence across the continent and, critically, to preventing EU taxpayer funds from funneling into extremist networks.

The vote, a decisive 381-167 with 15 abstentions, is a stark call for EU member states to forge a coordinated strategy against what lawmakers boldly termed "Islamist entryism." This acknowledges the insidious infiltration of Muslim Brotherhood networks within European institutions and civil society, a threat too long ignored.

The measure now urges member states to submit critical information, enabling the Council of the European Union to finally assess if Brotherhood-linked individuals and organizations meet the stringent criteria for terrorist designation. It demands unflinching scrutiny of alleged front organizations, opaque financial networks, youth groups, and any other entities associated with this dangerous movement.

While this vote does not automatically brand any group as terrorist, its political weight is immense. It ratchets up significant pressure on EU institutions and national governments to move beyond rhetoric and towards concrete action.

Even more critically, the resolution demands the European Commission investigate if, and how, EU funding has tragically reached Brotherhood-associated organizations. It's a vital step to finally strengthen safeguards against public money being diverted to fuel Islamist networks – a betrayal of public trust that must end.

This vital initiative was spearheaded by the center-right European People’s Party (EPP), the Parliament’s largest political group, garnering crucial support from principled conservative and centrist lawmakers who recognize the grave danger at hand.

Ahead of Thursday’s vote, French EPP lawmaker Céline Imart, a courageous voice leading the group’s efforts, forcefully called for a crackdown on Islamist influence. She drew the essential distinction: "We need to make sure Europe doesn’t fund Islamists. Islam as a faith and political Islam as an ideology must not be conflated. We must protect both democracy and religious freedom," Imart declared, adding, "Where rules allow, the Council should list individuals and organisations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist entities. European money must not fund groups that threaten our rights and freedoms." Her words resonate with common sense and a commitment to genuine liberty.

The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group, another steadfast force behind the measure, rightly celebrated its passage. "A massive victory for our hard work!" the group proclaimed, underscoring their clear objective: "no funding, no collaboration and no more Muslim Brotherhood entryism in European institutions and Member States." And there it is.

Further solidifying the broad support for this critical move, the European Jewish Congress also welcomed the vote, hailing it as an important step towards confronting extremist networks and their illicit financing, while urging the Council to swiftly act on Parliament’s clear position.

This vote did not come out of nowhere. It follows mounting scrutiny of the Brotherhood’s clandestine activities across Europe, including a May 2025 French government investigation that starkly raised concerns about the movement’s alleged efforts to expand its influence through religious associations, educational institutions, and civil society organizations – essentially, a long march through the institutions.

France’s National Assembly had already led the way, passing a resolution in January that explicitly urged consideration of an EU terrorist designation, demonstrating a growing continental awareness of the threat.

Crucially, the European Parliament’s overdue action now echoes the decisive leadership of President Donald Trump’s administration. Years ago, while the establishment dithered, Trump acted, designating three Muslim Brotherhood chapters as terrorist entities in January after ordering a comprehensive review of the movement’s branches the previous November.

Under Trump’s direction, the State Department courageously designated the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. Simultaneously, the Treasury Department designated the Egyptian and Jordanian chapters as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, directly citing their overt support for Hamas – a stark reminder of who these groups truly serve.

As Secretary of State Marco Rubio rightly stated at the time, "These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to thwart Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ violence and destabilization wherever it occurs." It was a clear, America First stance against global extremism.

Now, with the European Parliament’s resolution on the books, the ball is firmly in the court of EU institutions and member states. They must decide whether to finally follow through with similar designations and, more importantly, implement the proposed restrictions on funding and institutional cooperation. The integrity of European societies, and the safety of its citizens, depend on their resolve. It’s time for action, not just words, to protect Western values from those who seek to undermine them.
