Family of Teen Indian Sexual Attacker Condemns American Victim for ‘Overreacting’

In a story that sounds less like accountability and more like excuse-making on autopilot, the family of a teenage Indian boy who groped an American woman at a New Delhi metro station is blaming the victim for “overreacting.” According to them, the teen simply got “carried away” during his first up-close encounter with a blonde woman — because apparently basic boundaries are optional now.

The American woman was visiting India to attend a friend’s wedding and described the incident as the single ugly moment that spoiled what had otherwise been eight fun and memorable days. Unfortunately, that one moment was enough to leave a lasting impression.

Her experience was shared on social media by Gaurav Sabnis, a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology and a former instructor of the woman. She reached out to him because she remembered his blunt warning about traveling in India, especially in Delhi, where he cautioned that her appearance would draw unwanted attention. As it turns out, he wasn’t exaggerating.

According to the woman, the attention started immediately after she landed, with strangers constantly asking for photos. She declined most requests, agreeing only to take pictures with women and children. That seemed reasonable enough — until a teenage boy, estimated to be around 14 or 15, approached her at a Delhi Metro station while standing next to his mother and sister.

Believing the situation was harmless, she agreed. That assumption was short-lived.

The teen put his arm around her shoulder, then escalated quickly, grabbing her breasts and spanking her before laughing as if he’d pulled off a prank. The woman reacted with anger and shoved him away, knocking him to the ground. Rather than apologizing, the boy’s mother accused the American tourist of overreacting and suggested she should have indulged her son because he had “never met a blond lady up close.”

Yes, apparently sexual assault now comes with a cultural disclaimer.

The incident was enough to sour the woman’s view on returning to India or South Asia at all. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed sadness for Indian women, wondering aloud if this kind of behavior is part of their everyday reality.

The Times of India reported that the story quickly went viral, with most social media users backing the American woman and criticizing both the teen and his “overprotective” mother. Many commenters pointed to what’s known as “Raja Beta Syndrome,” a term describing young men raised as untouchable princes by mothers who defend their behavior at all costs.
