Federal Net Closes on Ilhan Omar: Birthdate Change at Heart of Immigration Scandal

The federal dragnet has tightened around Rep. Ilhan Omar, a prominent figure in the radical 'Squad,' following a recent raid on her Washington D.C. home by Homeland Security Investigations. At the heart of this escalating criminal probe lies a single, glaring detail: a suspicious alteration of her birthdate in public records, a move that critics contend could unravel her very claim to U.S. citizenship.

This convenient change in public records, which inexplicably occurred after Omar's 2018 election to Congress, serves as a crucial lead for investigators. If the Minnesota Democrat is indeed one year older than she now claims, it would directly challenge her eligibility for the derivative citizenship she reportedly acquired in 2000 – a legal vulnerability that could carry severe consequences.

For years, Omar’s birthdate was consistently listed across various public platforms, including the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library, Wikipedia, and even the BBC, as October 4, 1981. This was the widely accepted information throughout her tenure in the state House and well into her first months in Congress.

Yet, in May 2019, following a viral video from a political opponent questioning her age, Omar’s congressional staff sprang into action. Emails reviewed by The Post reveal a concerted effort to push her birth year forward by one year, shifting it to 1982.

"On May 17, 2019, Library staff were informed by Rep. Omar's congressional staff that her birth year was incorrect and requested that we change it to 1982," wrote the director of the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library just days after the alteration. The director further noted in a May 24, 2019 email that Omar's staff were actively "working with Wikipedia and with the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress and other sources to correct her birth year on those sites."

The legislative reference library director, who has since remained silent on the matter, previously explained that the initial 1981 birth year was adopted because it was "widely available—in Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory—and so we added that birthdate without documentation." An admission that raises further questions about the thoroughness of public record keeping for elected officials.

Predictably, Omar's representatives have vehemently denied any allegations of immigration fraud, dismissing the federal probe as a politically motivated attack. "For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation," Omar declared in a Monday statement on X, attempting to deflect from the serious nature of the investigation by blaming political rivals.

The Minnesota firebrand has long maintained that she obtained "derivative citizenship" through her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, who she claims naturalized in 2000, five years after entering the U.S. from Somalia. "I became a citizen actually before I turned 18," she told The Intercept in a September 2018 interview. "My father became a citizen and so I got my citizenship through that process."

However, AJ Kern, a former political opponent who challenged Omar in the 2022 House Democratic primary, has sharply questioned this narrative. Kern emphasized, "she claims her citizenship narrative is that she derived citizenship through her father when she was a 17-year-old minor." Kern further asserted that for derivative citizenship, "two things have to be true — one, her father had to naturalize; and two, she still had to be a minor — and what I have found is that it's highly likely that neither of those things are true." Kern's FEC complaint, seeking proof of citizenship, was unfortunately dismissed, with a judge determining it was "the job of Congress to vet their members." A responsibility many would argue has been woefully neglected.

Should investigators find that Omar made false statements on official forms—such as a passport renewal or bank loan application—she could face prosecution, as naturalization fraud carries a 10-year statute of limitations. Those familiar with the ongoing, multi-year federal criminal investigation into Omar indicate that she is indeed being scrutinized for potentially making false statements on immigration forms.

When asked about the targets of the Homeland Security Investigations raid, Kern suggested agents would be searching for "her citizenship papers, her father's naturalization record." These are the very documents that could confirm or debunk Omar’s long-standing claims.

Notably, President Trump himself boosted Kern's claims in a December 2025 Truth Social post, and administration officials have consistently highlighted the investigation into Omar for possible immigration fraud. It seems some concerns, dismissed as conspiracy theories by the left, now warrant federal attention. Reps for Omar's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, which is hardly surprising when serious questions remain unanswered.

This ongoing federal investigation is not merely a political spat; it strikes at the core of immigration integrity and accountability for those in power. Americans deserve elected officials who adhere to the rule of law, and any attempt to manipulate records or mislead authorities must be met with the full force of justice. The truth about Ilhan Omar's past and her path to citizenship must be brought to light, ensuring that no one, especially a Member of Congress, is above the law in a nation built on transparency and the honest application of our immigration system.
